The Invisible Man returns to theaters in 2020 in the form of a Universal reboot produced by Blumhouse, and here’s everything we know about it. While Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Wolf Man tend to be the poster creatures when it comes to Universal Studios’ classic movie monsters, The Invisible Man seems to unfairly get overlooked. Sure, a mad scientist that turns himself invisible and then goes insane might not be as cool on the surface as an undead bloodsucker or a howling lycanthrope, but as played by Claude Rains, he’s no less a memorable villain.
The Invisible Man has experienced a bit of a struggle getting back to the big screen. Universal’s quickly aborted “Dark Universe” had cast Johnny Depp in the role, but when that whole enterprise went south after the failure of both Dracula Untold and Tom Cruise’s The Mummy, the prospects Depp would actually play the part looked slim. In early 2019 though, things finally got back on track with the announcement that an Invisible Man reboot was set to kick off a new line of standalone horror movies based on the classic monsters.

While it’ll be a while before The Invisible Man once again embarks on an unseen assault, that’s no reason not to start getting excited. Here’s what to expect from the new film.
The Invisible Man Reboot Release Date
Universal and Blumhouse’s Invisible Man reboot will arrive in theaters on February 28, 2020. The film will be written and directed by Leigh Whannell, who’s no stranger to the world of horror. Whannell wrote the first three Saw installments, all four Insidious movies, and the acclaimed 2018 sci-fi/horror entry Upgrade. Whannell also directed Upgrade, as well as Insidious 3.
The Invisible Man Reboot Cast
Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) leads the Invisible Man cast as Cecilia Kass, a woman targeted by the titular villain. Said bad guy will be played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen from Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House series. Australian actress Harriet Dyer has been cast as the sister of Moss’ character, while Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time) plays Sydney, Celicia’s neighbor. Rounding things out is Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton) as Sydney’s dad, a friend of Cecilia’s.
The Invisible Man Reboot Story
Based on the official plot synopsis released so far, this version of The Invisible Man will have little in common with the original. Moss’ character, Cecilia, is trapped in an abusive relationship with genius scientist Jack Griffin (Jackson-Cohen), but manages to escape his grip and retreat into hiding. Griffin subsequently looks to have died by suicide, and leaves Cecilia a portion of his considerable wealth. Before long though, it becomes clear to Cecilia that her ex-boyfriend’s demise might not be as clear cut as it seems. The problem she faces is trying to convince the other people in her life that she’s in danger from a person that can’t be seen.
